Which pair of chino trousers suits your body shape depends mainly on thigh width, how the waistband sits and the silhouette you want. Regular Fit suits many men because the cut is classic and leaves plenty of freedom of movement. Slim Fit looks slimmer and more modern, but needs stretch fabric or a precise cut. Comfort Fit or relaxed chinos are sensible if you want extra room at the waist, seat or thighs.
As a simple rule: if you’re after comfort, choose Regular Fit or Comfort Fit. If you want a slimmer look, choose Slim Fit with stretch.
Men’s chinos are very suitable for the office when you choose a colour, cut and fabric that look smart. Grey, dark blue, beige or black chinos with a clean leg line and neat workmanship are particularly appropriate.
When you wear them with a shirt, blazer, fine‑knit jumper or leather shoes, a pair of chinos reads as office‑appropriate without being as formal as suit trousers. For Business Casual they are therefore one of the most versatile men's trousers.
A chino is a specific type of fabric trousers. The term fabric trousers is more general and can cover many styles, including suit trousers, cotton trousers or casual trousers. A chino is characterised by its smooth fabric, clean cut and smart-casual character.
You can style a pair of men's chinos very differently depending on the occasion. For the office, wear a shirt, a blazer, a fine‑knit jumper and leather shoes. For casual looks, go for a polo shirt, a T‑shirt, a jumper, trainers or a shirt‑jacket.
As a simple rule of thumb: dark chinos look smarter, light chinos feel more relaxed. Plain, understated tops make the outfit feel more modern and stop the chinos from coming across as too formal.
Grey, dark blue and beige chinos are particularly versatile. Grey men's chinos look modern and neutral, dark blue chinos are especially suitable for the office, and beige chinos are classic and summery.
If you're choosing just one pair of chinos for as many occasions as possible, grey or dark blue are usually the safest choice. Beige works particularly well for spring, summer and smart-casual looks.
