FROM TAILOR-MAKING TO INDUSTRIAL PLANT

The master tailor Johann Hinrichs founded the Hinrichs company in Mittegroßefehn in 1954. At that time, he began customizing men’s clothing for a small group of customers in rented rooms. He took measurements from his customers and made the desired item of clothing individually and according to the rules of the art. There were two or three fittings and then the new garment fits. Four years later, the company moved to Ostgroßefehn to a larger workshop with its own shop.

DEVELOPMENT AT THE GROSSEFEHN LOCATION

At the beginning of the sixties, ready-made clothing began to outstrip the previous mainstay of custom-made products. The tailoring shop took the first step on the way to becoming an industrial company with the series production of men’s vests. However, the resounding success came with the development of our own collection of men’s trousers. New employees were hired for this. Due to the constantly growing production, the rooms in the workshop soon became too small, so that the construction of an own factory building was started. The aspiring company proudly moved into its new headquarters in 1969.

COMPANY DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION EXPANSION

Hinrichs trousers quickly became a hit and the production of men’s vests was given up. In 1970, 200 pairs of trousers were produced every day. Due to the increasing demand for Hinrichs trousers, the production capacity was expanded from 200 to 400 trousers a day in 1972. In 1975 a further expansion of the company had become necessary in order to increase the production volume to 600 trousers per day. A fourth construction project has made it possible to produce 1.000 men’s trousers a day at the Großefehn site since 1977. Finally, in 1985, the storage capacity was increased and a new administration building was put into operation.

PRODUCTION IN PRESOV

Every success needs to be defended, including the success of the Hinrichs company. When at the beginning of the seventies the competition in the clothing industry became more and more massive due to foreign production, the management reacted immediately. Contacts with what was then Czechoslovakia were established as early as 1972.
Through the Iron Curtain, the company placed subcontracts with efficient Czech cooperation partners who were able to guarantee Hinrichs’ high quality standard. This contract production has developed into a very decisive factor over the years. It made it possible at an early stage to successfully counter the pressure of competition through inexpensive production.

TAKEOVER OF THE SCHWERINER PLANT OF VEB KLEIDERWERKE GÜSTROW

As one of the first investors in the new federal states, Hinrichs Bekleidungswerk GmbH took over a production facility in eastern Germany in 1990. Both the building and the machinery first had to be brought up to date with considerable investments. The employees were extensively trained for the requirements of the new technology, so that the company was soon working under market-economy conditions. In September 1991 the plant was officially inaugurated in the presence of the then Chancellery Minister Rudolf Seiters. The Schwerin plant was entrusted with the production of more than 1.000 pieces a day, which were sent to the main plant for commissioning Großefehn were delivered.

FIRST TALKS ABOUT THE REALIZATION OF A BRANCH IN LUBOTICE

Success gives courage. So the decision was made to intensify the involvement in the then CSFR that began in 1972. With the opening of the Eastern markets after the fall of the Wall, the idea of an own plant in the East solidified and the first preliminary talks began to be held in this regard. The Hinrichs clothing factory was a welcome client and trading partner in the former Czechoslovakia. The visit of President Vaclav Havel in 1990 underlined this emphatically.

ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS

The installation of a 370 square meter rooftop photovoltaic system with an output of 43.5 kW on the company building in 2005 also demonstrates the pronounced ecological awareness. In the following years, extensive modernization measures are gradually implemented (complex roof insulation, new window fronts, modern daylight lighting), which noticeably reduce energy consumption. For the future, a further ecological commitment is part of the company’s compulsory program. After all, every investment in serious environmental projects is an investment in a better future.
